Application Engineer at Vanguard, founder of StartUp Hero

Since September 2026 I have been an Application Engineer at Vanguard Asset Management in Manchester, developing and maintaining internal systems across the frontend and backend with Java Spring Boot, TypeScript and Node.js. On AWS I work with S3 for storage, Glue, ECS and EC2 for batch compute, and Athena for analytics on large datasets. It follows my 2025 internship there, where I built fraud-detection and anti-money-laundering features with React, TypeScript and Node.js.

I also run StartUp Hero, which builds and operates software for clients in Cyprus. SportsHero, our athletic academy management platform, is used by leading academies including APOEL, Anorthosis and Ev Zeen. We also built UBook Cy for event tickets and restaurant reservations, an in-house food ordering system for the Photos Photiades Group, and a building management platform for communal expenses.

Before Vanguard I was a web developer at BeemAd, serving location-based ads on display-mounted delivery backpacks: Raspberry Pi and Android units with real-time data, a custom CI/CD pipeline on GitHub webhooks, and an advertiser platform on the OpenStreetMap API.

2023 — 2026

First Class in Computer Science at Manchester

I graduated from the University of Manchester with a First Class BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, with coursework in data structures, algorithms and systems programming. In 2023 our team AI Captain placed 2nd at the 5th CASSINI Hackathon, using machine learning on Sentinel-1 satellite data and correlating AIS signals with ship imagery to detect illegal vessels and alert nearby ships and authorities. The Chief of Defence of the Cyprus National Guard commended the project personally.

2022 — 2023

National service

I served in the Cyprus National Guard as an assistant staff sergeant. I trained as an anti-tank specialist, achieving the highest grade in the school, and was stationed at the front-line Ledras outposts. I managed schedules for 45 soldiers and built two software tools for soldier and unit management.

2020 — now

Building for the community

In 2020 I founded Fight Air Pollution, a citizen-led initiative against toxic factory emissions in Dali, Nicosia. Residents report incidents on the platform, which maps smell intensity across the region in real time (2GIS and Google Maps) to support the campaign to relocate the factories.

During the pandemic I built a secure patient portal with Zoi Medical Diagnostic Center that delivered COVID-19 test results in real time and at scale, cutting waiting times during testing. I also built Chain of Change, a donation platform for students that raised over €10,000 in six months, and at the Bridges of Solidarity hackathon I built LePontCy so Beirut residents could list their needs and receive donations after the August 2020 explosion.

2019 — 2020

Ciclo and the Presidential Bro Fist

With the Ciclo Junior Achievement team I came up with renting out appliances and furniture for short periods, plus a map of donation and recycling points so people could get rid of things responsibly. Lockdown gave me the time to build ciclo.com.cy.

We placed 3rd nationwide, and then got something better than a trophy: on 14 September 2020 we pitched Ciclo to President Nikos Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace. He liked it enough to give us the Presidential Bro Fist.

2018 — 2020

CanTeens: my first company

Long canteen queues ate our breaks, so I built CanTeens: a website and app (Swift and Java) for ordering from the school canteen ahead of time. It reached 400 daily active users. With Yiangos Kleopas and Andreas Fatta I formed CanTeens LLC in Delaware, went through AngelHack's 12-week accelerator, and placed 2nd of 50 in Junior Achievement Cyprus.

2016 — 2019

Internships and Eco-Hang

Most of what I know I taught myself over many summers, with online courses and a lot of building. Internships sped that up: Trophies (a US video-game trading startup) in 2016, Tabs and Spaces (a Cypriot agency building platforms for industry leaders) in 2018, where I learned to build web platforms from scratch in PHP and MySQL, and Cocoon Creations in 2019 for full-stack app development.

In 2018 I was CTO of Eco-Hang, a Junior Achievement company making hangers from recycled paper. I built the website and the iOS and Android ordering app, designed the logo and modelled the hanger mould in CAD. We made the top 10 and won the award for best communication strategy.

2014 — 2017

Hackathons, a tech club and the ISS

I have loved programming since I was a kid and joined Hack Cyprus at 10, starting with a Hack Cyprus Youth event. At the 2014 hackathon my team built Take You Take Me, a ride-sharing service, and in 2015 I built NoWait!, ordering food from your restaurant table, with my friend Petros Diomedous.

In 2016 I started running The English School's technology club with Petros and Andreas Fatta, teaching students the basics of programming. I also got my amateur radio licence that year. Our radio club made Cyprus's first contact with the International Space Station, asking questions to an astronaut orbiting at 17,130 mph, and I was interviewed live on the news about it.
